Chris Judd would be the coup of the trading period, as no one expects him to move. If Juddy decides to head home to Victoria every club will deal their first pick and a best player or two they believe they can do without. Odds are the Eagles will respond with the words “keep trying.” Judd single handley won’t win games for a weak team but he would sell lots of tickets, for teams like Melbourne, Carlton, and Richmond just to mention a few. I also expect wherever Judd would go so to travels that girl in the red dress.
With the exception the of key position type players like Reiwoldts and Jonathon Browns, Judd has a highest MRP (marginal revenue product) number for a midfielder in the AFL. MRP is the little economics thing that measures what financial worth a player is to a team.
The beneficial scenarios for getting Juddy are numerous if a team can use the nifty one in conjunction with Miss Twigley. That may sound silly but that’s just the type of package that the LA Galaxy soccer team are using with David Beckham and Posh. Now off course, Judd and his partner have a different public persona than the two Poms, but the doors that could be opened for them in the bigger Victorian market may just help the pair’s bottom line without hurting a team’s salary cap. And I’m taking it for granted that the Eagles No.3 is not going to let that sweet 10 slip through his fingers.
Even leaving the piece of skirt out of the equation, It would be fun to see just what difference Judd could make to Collingwood’s ticket sales, as they play so many games at the MCG, and their television ratings (re: Plugger moving to Sydney in 1995). The same theory goes for all the others Victorian teams.
If Chris Judd is traded to another team, unlike most players, his picture would appear on the front page of every mainstream AFL city’s newspaper wearing the club’s jumper, and the logo of the team‘s SPONSOR - just like Plugger. Cha-ching!
What would I give up to get Judd to my team? Whatever it takes. Sheedy and Judd at Melbourne in ’08; they must go for it.
