Default Who won? Chris Judd to Carlton Trade

It's probably the biggest trade in the history of the game to date. Chris Judd to Carlton in return for picks #3, #20, and Joshua Kennedy. With pick 3 they secured Chris Masten. Tony Notte with pick 20.

Carlton gets arguably the best player in the game with Judd. At 24 years of age he still has a good 7-8 years left in him. Will considerably improve their midfield which was aclready quite reasonable. What it won't do is improve their backline which is lacking terribly or their forward line which is non-existent behind Fevola.

West Coast gets one of the best midfielders in the draft (my tip for best). He virtually plays a similar game to Judd and may eventually become an even better player than him and best of all for Eagle fans he's a homegrown product. Notte is a skinny key forward with plenty of talent but with only 70KG on his 194cm body he's a long way off AFL. Enter Josh Kennedy, a #4 pick in the '05 draft whom looks like he might be ready to start making impacts on the game. He isn't going to become a standout just yet but will provide quality support and for Lynch and Hansen and should improve alot this year if his NAB form was anything to go on.

I think West Coast come out well ahead despite the loss of Judd and think Carlton paid heavily in a superhigh quality draft. Yes they kept Kreuzer but look through the top 10 and see what they missed out on. Plus the guys in the 20's.

ALI-G I hear what you say in regards to immediate short-term on-field performance.

However, Judd is worth more than just his playing ability. Memberships and attracting key sponsorships come as part of the "package". Thats his true worth. He is miles in-front of what any kid can stimulate.

5 clubs had a genuine crack at Judd, 4 acted reasonably professional 1 acted like a pack of childish unprofessional idiots. IMHO if you asked any of the 4 professional clubs they would agree with me that Judd meant more to them than adding to their playing stocks.

Judd is a star there is no doubt about that. If the draft picks were good pickups - W.C got the better deal by far. But who knows now? We will know in about four years...

cgih is right, too hard to tell at such an early stage. Judd has almost if not everything you'd want in midfielder, as long as his injury isn't permenant. Don't know if Carlton could've solved their backline problems in this draft - there weren't a lot of decent backmen that went high, apart from Rance and Pears, but they both play quite loose which isn't what they're looking for.

Masten's will be good, but I'm quite certain he won't reach the heights of Judd (as much as I'd like him to) - as a player he's much more vanilla - doesn't have the burst of speed, agility and the goal kicking ability of Judd, but will be a very good inside mid, in the vain of someone like Simon Black. Was a very safe pick by WC.

Kennedy has a great work ethic about him and I'm sure he'll make it AFL footballer, as WC development staff are a lot better than Carlton's. As you mentioned, the signs in P/S were promising - very willing to put his body on the line and much more of a bash and crash old style CHF than Hansen, who's more of the modern day lead-up style.

Notte has a bit of X-factor about him - in particular a pair of very sticky hands. WC went with 3 very safe options in Masten, Ebert and Selwood, so it made sense to take a bit of a punt and draft a LT prospect with a lot of potential that would need several P/S before debuting.

Lets also not forget that Carlton also got pick 46 (Armfield) out of the trade, who could well turn out to be a handy player for them.

Carlton.

in all fairness, pick no.1 should've been part of the deal.
Carlton had too much bargaining power. (not their fault, they played by the rules).
tanking the last 11 games has resulted in gaining the best player in comp & the no.1 draft pick. it's not right. i blame the priority draft pick system for this.

I think Josh Kennedy will be alot better than one might think. He has a big engine and never gives up.Masten will develop into one of the top midfielders in the comp.Notte will be a very good player-Give him about 3-4 years to develop.
Juddy served the Eagles well and I think the deal has worked well for both teams.Carlton short term and the Eagles long term will benefit greatly.
