Default 2001 Draft - Picks 1 to 16

1. Luke Hodge - Hawthorn 66 Games
2. Luke Ball - St Kilda 86 Games
3. Chris Judd - West Coast 115 Games
4. Graham Polak - Fremantle 72 Games(Traded to Richmond)
5. Xavier Clarke - St Kilda 79 Games
6. Ashley Sampi - West Coast 78 Games
7. David Hale - Kangaroos 37 Games
8. James Bartel - Geelong 90 Games
9. Luke Molan - Melbourne Delisted
10. Sam Power - Western Bulldogs 70 Games
11. Richard Cole - Collingwood 56 Games(Traded to Essendon)
12. Brent Reilly - Adelaide 68 Games
13. Nick Del Santo - St Kilda 98 Games
14. Ashley Watson - Kangaroos Delisted
15. Barry Brooks - Port Adelaide 8 Games(Traded to St Kilda)
16. Rick Ladson - Hawthorn 30 Games

Looking at the above it would be very easy to say that West Coast had the best player with the selections taken and yes I agree, but you could give me Luke Ball, Xavier Clarke and Nick Del Santo as a trade for Chris Judd and Ashley Sampi.

Give me your 3-2-1 as the teams that fared the best in the first round of the 2001 AFL Draft.

My votes are as follows:

3 Votes - St Kilda
2 Votes - West Coast
1 Vote - Hawthorn

Who were the dud recruiting teams for the 2001 AFL Draft 1st round?

Well I think that the Kangaroos really blew their opportunity here with 2 selections in the top 14 with David Hale and Ashley Watson(?). Melbourne also blew it with their selection of Luke Molan(?).

Let me know what you think here.

Next week I will try to bring you Round 2 of 2001.

The saints got the best group of players from the Draft, but they haven't put it to work at all yet.

3 - Saints
2 - West Coast
1 - Geelong

Its hard to say, Luke Hodge hasn't put together a good solid year, Jimmy Bartel is now putting in week to week solid performances and Ladson is still developing.

Dud recruiting team from Round 1 has to go to Melbourne - 1 pick and 1 delisting.

The worst would have to be Melbourne and whoever traded away there selections for that year..

Picks 17,18,19 need to be included in round 1 mate. Hodge, Ball and Judd were all priority picks and if my memory serves me well there were some nice pickups later that year!

17. James Kelly - Geelong
18. Shane Harvey - Essendon
19. Jason Gram - Brisbane

The addition of Kelly would bring Geelong to 3rd after 1 round perhaps even 2nd. The fact Grams now at St.Kilda puts them fighting out top 3 with Geelong, however the fact West Coast snaveled Judd at pick #3 and he's now a mile ahead of the rest of that field and arguably the best player in the league makes them a clear winner.

Obvously wc got the best player but i think as far as picking players with the selections available geelong did the best. Pick number 8 and ended up with the 3rd or 4th best player.

Mine would be

3 votes - geelong
2 votes - st. kilda
1 vote - west coast

also is this the draft where sam mitchell went number 35 or something?

Picked by then recruiting manager Craig Cameron. However, Craig is no longer at the club.
