some lessons that i learned from last year :

* no more cloke, thomas, davey, and all these mid-priced forwards... they give u an average of 70... not good enough... 4 premiums + 2 out of hall, porpz, n tredea + 3 rotating rookies

* never trade anyone in the ruck department unless a horrible run of injury... pick 4 for all year... hence, i really want to have cox, wood, kreuzer, and hampson...

* 1 400k mids + 3 300k mids + 1 200k + 3 rotating rookies... reason for this is simply because if theres gonna be a new dt star (like priddis last year), it will be in this department... this is where most likely ill do 1 trade in rd 3... hence u dont wanna spend 2 trades to do this... have players with various prices, so a straight swap is possible...

* defender... no idea yet, still working on it... lol

pick consistant scorers, eg o'keefe.
pick players who dont get injured, eg pavlich.
pick forwards in the teams u expect to be higher up the ladder.
pick defenders in teams u expect to be lower on the ladder.

A) Mistakes:
Buying Jonothan Brown at top dollar coming back from a serious injury and falling near half his starting price at one stage before returning to his glory days. Buying in Jarred brennan after he had 2 monster games to only to watch his value decline after 4 mediocre performances to follow.

I didn't make this mistake last year but previously have bought players in dual positions in the wrong one. Guys like McPhee and Chapman shouldn't be bought in as centres where there are heaps of top notch options instead saved for back and forward spots where the options are fewer and farther between. Koschitzke is better value as a ruck than a forward for the same reason.

B) Good moves:
Saw Alwyn Davey in the NAB cup and realised he was exactly what we were missing and was more likely to play 22 than his higher drafted team-mates. He ended up playing 15 from memory averaged around 70 and only missed on 22 because he broke his arm. Cyril Rioli looks to give Hawthorn the same breath of fresh air as they have no crumbers who are tackling machines.

Spending the extra money on Dean Cox. The guy missed 3 games and still outscored the other elite rucks who played 22 games in overall points.

Biggest mistake I made was not having enough time to check rd1 teams (due to work). It left me players short, and force to 3 wasted trades. Try and pick 22 players who will play the 1st 3 rds.

Pick 2 ruckmen who will play the whole season. I found trading the other ruckman as being a very profitable process.

MISTAKES:

- Using up trades too early (was playing 1-2 short in the final series)
- Having to trade alot of my guns: Goddard (unavoidable), Hodge (poor start to season), McLean (unavoidable), Bowden (poor start to season)
- Selecting average mid range mids that didn't improve enough/at all (Rischitelli and M.Murphy)
- Trading Priddis after rd 1 (for Lappin)
- Selecting A.Sandilands
- Forward line full of flops (Fevola, Monfries, R.Murphy, McDougall)
- Trading in Brennan after a couple of good rounds
- Trading in Tredrea (for Fevola - when he started to come good again)
- Not selecting any Geelong players from the start (except for Selwood)

GOOD MOVES:

- Selecting good initial cash cows (e.g. Begley, Selwood, Thomas, Hudson, Ryder, Edwards, Davey, Rodan)
- Good mid priced selections in backs (B.Jones, Bock, Ad****, Waters, Birchall)
- Selecting Dean Cox
- Trading in Cornes, Kornes and Pavlich just when they all hit their straps.
- Captain selection was generally very solid (don't remember having a situation when the captain had an absolute flop)

mistakes i made last year
- bought too many middle-tier players who required upgrade (waste of future trades)
- buying Aaron Sandilands. he's not suited to DT.
- skimped on my reserves. cash cows are very important. they are worth paying extra for.
- removing Priddis just before the rd1 deadline. noooooooooooooooooooooo...
- not buying K.Cornes when i had the chance. even though he was pricey at the time, he would have been worth it.

mistakes last year:
* wasting trades on Kennelly! Dropped him when he got injured and then stupidly grabbed him back when he looked right (but wasn't)
* not keeping enough trades 'til the end (finals). Can't rate this highly enough.
* getting caught with too many rookies up forward who then got dropped.
* putting in my team in early so got caught playing in my league against all the good teams early and couldn't win enough at end to make 8.

* I would also try and avoid too many players from the one team. If they play in the wet or have a bad loss you could be in trouble.

* Hard to do - but if you think you are going to figure in finals it might be worth looking at who the weaker teams play in the last 4 rounds. Those teams' players might be in for extra points.
