We seem to have stalled.

OK work this out.

3 men rented a room which cost them $30 in total.

The owner of the motel realised he had overcharged them by $5 and sent his room boy back up to them with the $5 refund.

The room boy realised he could not break $5 up 3 ways even, and decided he would give them $1 each and keep the remaining $2 for himself.
so, they paid $27 for the room, or $9 each.

If they paid $27 for the room and room boy kept $2, where is the other $1.

The $27 they paid included the $2 the room boy kept, and they got back $1 each which makes it $30

If the room boy gave them back $1 each which makes $3 in total than they paid $28 for the room not $27 and the room boy kept the $2.

30 - 5 = 25

25 + 3 = 28

Room boy gets $2,little bloody criminal.

If they paid $28 for the room, they couldn't have possibly got $1 back each. So basically, they paid $25 for the room, they little criminal got $2, and they got back $1 each.
