Default Massive $100,000 wager on Geelong

A few days after AFL legend and Lions coach Leigh Matthews called for an end to betting on games, a leviathan punter has weighed in with a massive $100,000 wager on Geelong to smash struggling Melbourne this weekend.

Sportingbet Australia snapped up the six figure bet at $1.04 and have challenged heavyweight punters to continue unloading on what look to be the biggest certainties and hottest favourites to go around for some years.

Matthews this week called on the AFL - which has major sponsorships with two prominent betting outlets - to wash its hands of gambling because of suspicions about close results and the innuendo it creates for the game and those involved.

While Geelong look “past the post” on form, major upsets can and do happen in sport.

“No side deserves to be $1.04 in round three,” said Sportingbet Australia’s AFL manager Steve Fletcher.

“We saw Richmond pull off a big upset a few years ago and Carlton went within a kick of stunning the West Coast last year.

“Stranger things happen and if a hot pot is going to go down, we want to be sure we have plenty of the action.”

Its times like this you wish you where a bookmaker!
