Cricket Australia points finger at laser-wielding fan

Australia's cricketing authorities have apologised to South Africa after a laser light was directed at fielders of the visiting team during the second Twenty20 match in Brisbane yesterday.

Television replays detected a green coloured light flash across the face of South Africa’s Wayne Parnell as he dropped a difficult catch offered by Mike Hussey at the Gabba.

Hussey went on to make an unbeaten 53 and shared a 69-run unbroken partnership with Cameron White to guide Australia home in a tense finish on Tuesday.

Though the South African team did not complain, Cricket Australia offered their apologies.

“It’s just not cricket to do this sort of thing, it’s stupid,” Cricket Australia’s public affairs manager Peter Young said. “But the South African team has advised that it didn’t affect them and they’re not proposing to make a complaint.

“Cricket Australia has apologised to them that this has happened while they are guests in this country and they have accepted that apology."

Steps are now being taken to prevent this kind of incident happening again.

“We’re seeking police advice about what the maximum penalty might be. Our manager of crowd security is talking to police today just to understand that.

“If we detect people doing this sort of thing, we will react to the maximum possible extent that we can. We’re just taking advice on whether or not we can have charges laid,” Young said.

Anyone know where there is a video of this laser incident?

Found video - doesn't look like it would have interfered that much, was just on the ground.

It was a mean thing to disturb the concentration of the player. The security should have to check cricket fans for lasers from now on.
