Bombers get down to business

Saturday, 9 February 2008
The Bombers had their first taste of competitive football today as they launched into their first intraclub match of the year at Casey Fields oval in front of a strong Essendon crowd.
The teams were divided into players of more experience versus those of less experience, with the match providing the younger players an opportunity to test themselves against the senior group.
Although the more experienced players dominated for the majority of the match, there were some impressive displays by the younger guys including new recruit Tayte Pears who displayed some impressive touch with the football while using his body to his advantage.
Ricky Dyson was busy throughout the match, living up to expectations that he will be one to watch this season, while Alwyn Davey delighted fans with his silky foot skills and classy ability with the football.
However the standout performer of the match was 20-year-old Courtenay Dempsey who, after battling injuries last season, was in fine form using his blistering pace to his advantage.
"Courtenay is training consistently this season and has not missed a training session for four months," Knights said. "It certainly makes a difference when you compare it to last year when he missed every second week with a hamstring injury.
"Now we are able to see Courtenay with come training under him and some foundation and it makes him a much more dangerous player."
Matthew Lloyd did not participate in the match due to hamstring tightness with Knights reluctant to play the captain if he was not at full strength.
"Matthew has been a little bit tight in the upper hamstring for a couple of weeks,” Knights said. “It hasn’t been significant but just yesterday at training he felt his hamstring was a little tight again.
“I know he would have loved to play but it wasn’t worth the risk and we’ll monitor how he goes this week.”
