Default Not much of a Power Representation here??

G'day all first post so be kind.

Just noticed the club history under the sub forums and I wonder why hasn't the SANFL history been included into it.

Port Adelaide Football Club was established in 1870 not 1997. The Power which is the Port Adelaide Football Club was formed in 1997 but it still shares the heritage and history with the now known Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club (SANFL).

There has always been alot of argument here in SA from opposing supporters (i.e. The Crows and the other 8 SANFL clubs) about what club is what but at the core of it they are both recognised as the Port Adelaide Football Club by their supporters.

The simple answer is the SANFL is an inferior competition to the AFL/VFL and it would not be fair to include those statistics pre-1997. When the Power became a new AFL Franchise in 1997 the Port Adelaide Magpies still continued to play in the SANFL so technically they are 2 different organisations, even though they might affiliate themselves.

Of course from a Victorian point of view

Technically speaking The Port Adelaide Magpies Football (SANFL) is actually the new entity. The Port Adelaide Football Club (Power) is the reconised football club that was established in 1870.

So the officials from PAFC say.

Basically this is my fault.

As we are an AFL forum we had to draw the line in the sand somewhere.

The date was decided on by when

a/ Your VFL team was formed

or

b/ When your AFL license was given.

We didn't intend to offend anybody, just trying to aim for consistency.

Hope that answers your question.

I am a port adelaide supporter an even played for the club in the local competition.
with something like this you can only take the afl stats into consideration.
however there should be no doubting that port adelaide has been the greatest football club this country has ever produced and i think a lot of even victorian critics support this notion.

Tf, I think you should change it to Club Founded:1870, Joined AFL: 1997. What is used currently is simply incorrect.

Is it really that big a deal? It's an AFL forum with AFL statistics, no-one has put a gag order on you to stop you talking about your clubs SANFL history.

But to say Port Adelaide were formed in 1997 is just false. I'm not asking the SANFL premierships to count, I just want facts. I have no problem if all that is put is Joined AFL in 1997.

Default Port Adelaide Magpies

The Port Adelaide Magpies exist because it was a condition of the Powers AFL licence, insited upon by the other 8 clubs, that a new PA Magpies club was formed. Otherwise without the PA Maggies the SANFL would have suffered massive crowd losses. The Port Adelaide Football Club was formed in 1870 and left the SANFL at the end of 1996. The Power played its first AFL game, against Collingwood in 1997.
