round as Geelong host the Western Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at
Skilled Stadium.
Geelong are coming off brutal match against cellar-
dwellers Fremantle and will be without this year’s Brownlow Medal
favourite, in Gary Ablett (ankle) along with his fellow 2007 All-
Australian teammate Cameron Ling (fractured cheekbone).
The Bulldogs have added Scott Welsh and explosive midfielder Ryan Griffin
to last week’s line up that recorded an unconvincing 31 point victory
over Melbourne.
Geelong’s midfield depth will be tested without Ablett and Ling, but
they will regain Victorian representative James Kelly, who was a late
withdrawal against the Dockers while the impressive Brent Prismall
will fill the other midfield vacancy.
Prismall will be eager to continue the strong form that he showed earlier in the season as he attempts to secure his position leading into the finals.
The Bulldogs have omitted young West Australian forward Josh Hill and
defender Cameron Wight for the incoming Welsh and Griffin.
The battle of the midfields will be crucial in the outcome of this
match with Joel Corey, Joel Selwood and Brownlow Medallist Jimmy
Bartel pitted against Adam Cooney, Matthew Boyd and Daniel Cross.
Geelong’s tactics against ball-magnet Cooney will be of particular
interest with Ling, their No. 1 tagger out injured.
Western Bulldogs recruit Ben Hudson will battle against Geelong
ruckman Brad Ottens and Mark Blake. Forward Will Minson will be
required to support Hudson in the ruck throughout the game. However
with the forecasted showers late changes may be made as the teams
search for pace rather height.
The free-flowing football that both sides play is evident as the
Western Bulldogs (average 121 points) and Geelong (117 points) are the
highest scoring sides this season.
Both forward lines possess immensely talented medium size forwards in Steve Johnson, Matthew Stokes and Paul Chapman for the Cats and Jason Akermanis, Brad Johnson and Robert Murphy for the Bulldogs.
While the predicted showers may slow the pace of the game, still expect the dangerous forwards to provide many headaches for opposition defenders.
The home ground advantage may prove the difference in this game as the
hard-bodied Cats players are accustomed to wet-weather football at
Skilled Stadium whilst the Bulldogs play the majority of their
football under the roof at Telstra Dome. __________________ Andy Morris, Betfair AFL bet journalist | | | |
