This weekend’s twilight game between West Coast and Essendon on paper appears to be a foregone conclusion, as the determined Bombers play for a position in the finals, and the lacklustre Eagles attempt not to drop a priority pick.
Essendon have won six of their past seven games this season, and are looking dangerously close to securing a top eight position. Although like the rampant Western Bulldogs in 2005, they may have left their run too late.
Essendon won the earlier game between the clubs in round 12 by 22 points. But the home ground advantage, along with the desire for West Coast to create a winning culture will be enough to put the sting back into the formally bitter rivalry.
However, punters who are considering an
AFL bet on the outcome of this match should remember Essendon’s Round 14 triumph over Fremantle at Subiaco against the odds to begin their late season run to the Finals.
Expect a tighter match than predicted, but with the young midfield of the Bombers and the designated targets of Mathew Lloyd and Scott Lucas, Essendon will have more flexibility than West Coast who are already looking to 2009.
