Professional Sports Traders

What’s this sports book phenomenon?
I thought I’d better have a closer look...
Joe Sweeny,
Wealth Journal.
If you’re a
mug journo like me, there’s probably not a lot that stirs your loins.
Strangely,
my loins have just been stirred... but not shaken!
It took some
time to locate someone in the industry prepared to spill the beans. The real,
gritty beans. He was a Mr Alex Gray. He reeked of efficiency in a game he
appeared to know well. I discovered him embedded deep in the bowels of the
multi-billion dollar Sports book industry in Darwin, backed by what appeared to
be an adoring contingent of assistants.
“If you’re
punting for fun, I suggest you keep doing it!”, he said, sporting a wide grin.
“If you want to turn the fun into serious cash then you need to allow
professional traders to do it for you.” One of his assistants plonked some
coffee down. I thanked her and turned to Alex. “Are you trying to tell me you
can win on the horses?” He laughed, “Of course not! You can’t win on bloody
horses. Only bookmakers win on horses...but they are a heap of fun tho. Look,
this is about international sports events...it’s all about mathematical
imperatives and, even if you understood those, you’d still need to know how to
operate. Look at it this way; if you need a triple by-pass, why would ya want
to operate on yourself! Get a professional to operate for you. How much do ya
lose by doing ya own tax return for Christ’s sake?”
Alex lit up
a smoke, so I did too, “Ok, so what you do is obviously legal, yes?” “It’s
totally legal. If the government taxed this, they would have to allow a tax
deduction for every mug punter in Australia!”
“So, why
don’t you just do it yourself?” Alex took a deep breath, “I wish I could
just do it myself, but the process requires volume. I can’t shift markets around
with what I’ve got in the bloody bank. Give me $10 mil to play with and my
blokes will scare the shit out of the markets. When Sports book markets react to
voluminous amounts, indicating a high degree of confidence, odds shorten on one
side, the other side blows out the window, other Sports books follow that lead
...and we are there, waiting to pluck the juicy fruit. We know where to be
simply because we pushed them there! We are always the first to collect the
cream.”
I tried not
to look too intrigued, “Mmmm, so, if I had $10 mil I could do this?” “Maybe”,
said Alex. “If you spent 10 years here learning how to do it, and another ten
years building an information infrastructure, the sort of critical information
sources that we rely on ...maybe! But why bother...I mean, would you get a
degree in mechanical engineering just so you can service car?”
“Ok, so who
are your clients?” Alex put his hands behind his head and grinned, “If I told ya
that I’d have to kill ya. Some very big names and many smaller players...they
all get the same percentage return.”
“What sort
of percentage return?” Alex looked a little uneasy, “Shit you’re a nosy
bloke!
It’s a good return, ok...in the vicinity of 15% a month.”
“Can I see
your trading room?” Alex got up from his chair, “No you can’t... not that you’d
understand what was going on anyway, but that’s out of bounds. Look I’m flat out
right now, maybe we can continue this some other time.” I knew there wouldn’t be
another time. But I shook Alex’s hand and left. I wanted to talk further. All I
had was the website,
www.sportstraders.com.au and I was going to see if I could get more out of
that than I got from Alex.
I’ll let you know,
